Meet the Parents

This was probably the last event of the year. It is the time when teachers have the chance to meet the parents who want to discuss any concerns about their daughters. Some parents rely so much on the teacher but it takes two to tango. I'm quite happy with my students' results and my new year resolution has been set to improve their marks and most importantly to use a better approach in my teaching. I will probably be exploiting the Mac to enhance their learning.

Blogger Vs Media

I haven't been playing regular football these days. The futsal friendly between Bloggers (photobloggers and bloggers) and the Media (Brupress) was one of the few games I played for this year. It was organised by the main man, Ranoadidas, which was held at Harun's Gym. Nowadays, I rather pay a visit to the favourite and closest driving range in Mentiri hitting a smaller ball. I brought my camera but I only took few shots. For more detailed coverage, you can check Ucingitam website.

Teacher's Day Dinner

These pictures are taken from the belated celebration for the Teacher's Day, first time held at the school. Usually this type of event is held at restaurants and this year mostly opted to organise it since you have the time and place at your own discretion. I did not spend long since I have to zoom to bandar for the friendly futsal between Bloggers and Media.

M5 Award

It was the probably the last day for the Men 5 students before they move on to a new school next year. These students, some of them, I had taught during my first year at the school and I am proud they have reached to this stage. Pics here showed top students being honoured for their achievements this year. Congrats to the top students and I wish them all the best for their future.

Health Day

Last Sunday was the last day for the Health Expo held at ICC. Today was our turn to promote health awareness among our students in the school. The activities were mostly involving sports games. I did not get to see the first few events since I was invited to ICC for the launching of SPN 21, our new curriculum. Here are pictures to summarise the day.

What It Should Have Been

I don't know how many time this has happened to photographers in Brunei especially photobloggers. Taking someone's picture from his/her website and then took the credit for it is totally wrong. My picture was used in the today's Borneo Bulletin and the picture was credited to the reporter. It was taken from my Flickr gallery. Where are the ethics of this media reporter? First, its infringement of intellectual property rights and then took the picture without my permission, in simpler words, its just stealing. I did not put my watermark on the picture but that clearly does not give you the right to take the picture without my permission. What made it worst, the reporter put his name besides the picture. And one more thing, you could see there is a spelling error in the caption. Make it two mistakes there.

The Article with my pic.

*Edit - I found the online version here, and they still keep the spelling mistake.

Blue Eden

I went out last night to Blue Eden Cafe owned by Zaliariff to receive the prizes for winning the Barunaiku "Hari Raya" theme competition. I didn't expect since my pic was heavily edited in Photoshop and looking at other pictures submitted, I thought I did not have the chance to win. Also in attendance were Karyawan and CPS, the other winners, as well as Ripin, Ranoadidas ,Conia and another shutterbug, Hj Zainol. You can see the winning picture from Barunaiku and here. The food there looks nice and promising, I got to taste according to Zali the popular dish, Fish and Chip, which during my time in UK was my daily diet, alongside Kebabs, Garlic Nans and Lamb Currys. Thinking of it makes me want to go back to Manchester. I will definitely, however, come back to the restaurant and bring my family to try out some more food. The restaurant formerly Ahan Thai Cafe is opposite Taurean Cafe in Kiulap.

After Blue Eden, off we went to Empire to visit my in-laws who happen to stay there for the weekend.

To end this, its strange that I have been posting quite regularly these days. Maybe the end of year bug, work getting less and holidays is quite near, so more time to do some shoots.

Cleaning Campaign

The school continues the end of year activities with a trip to Serasa Beach organised by Geography and P.E department. The first activity was a cleaning campaign which started from the far end of the beach and ended at the volleyball/beach soccer area. The next activity was a mini inter-house tourney involving games such as dodge ball, thats the first time I saw being played, beach volleyball and a traditional game I used to play,"Main Belun". The rain started to drizzle around 9 which made me difficult to take pictures with one hand holding an umbrella. I wish my 400d was water-proof. Having a plastic bag covering my camera didn't help either. Despite the rain, the girls tried their best to enjoy the stay at the beach.

Movie and Jumble Sale

Latest pictures from SMPAPHM. The school turned into a cinema and a market, another exciting end of year activities jointly organised by Business Studies and History department. The students had 3 choices of movies; Ratatouille, Harry Potter and Night at the Museum, all played at the same time. I went for Ratatouille because I'm a fan of 3d cartoons.

Elmo and Raiyan

Updates on Raiyan, few months ago he was into Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, he would wiggle his body everytime he hears the intro song. Now, he is into Elmo and Sesame Street. I have been watching the Sesame Street DVD particulary the shows called "Elmocize" and "CinderElmo"for nearly the whole day, every day, every week. I know each songs, each lines of the show. Damn who's really into Elmo, the dad or son?

When he's not watching Elmo, he surfs the net just like the dad. No lah kidding.

What Teachers Make?

I've been trying to post this long time ago. This was from a forwarded email sent by a fellow teacher too. I'm contributing this to all teachers and not just teacher but to those who dedicate their time teaching others. And Happy Civil Service Day !

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.
One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education.
He argued, "What's a child going tolearn from someone who decided his best option in life was to
become a teacher?"
He reminded the other dinner guestswhat they say about teachers:
"Those who can, do. Those who can't,teach."

To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher,
Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?"

Bonnie, who had a reputation forhonesty and frankness replied,

"You 'want' to know what I make? (She paused for a second, then,began...)
"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honour.

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for
5 without an IPod, Game Cube, DVD or movie rental...

"You want to know what I make?" (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.)

I make kids wonder.

I make them question.

I make them criticize.

I make them apologize and mean it.

I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.

I teach them to write and then I make them write.

I make them read, read, read.

I make them show all their work in maths.

I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while
preserving their unique cultural identity.

Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life

(Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.) "Then, when people try to judge me by what I make,

I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant...

You want to know what I make? "I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What do you make?"

THERE IS MUCH TRUTH IN THIS STATEMENT:

"Teachers make every other profession" HERE HERE!
